4 Minutes of FIRE!

Tabata. It's become a real fitness buzzword. You've probably seen it on the cover of a lot of magazines lately. So what is it? And why is it that some folks trying it out are getting mind blowing results, while others are not reaping the rewards?


Tabata is essentially a crazy... I mean cray cray... intense workout. It's a four minute workout comprised of 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest, for 8 rounds. What kind of exercises can you do? Anything. Choose your own adventure. You just have to really really really get after during those 20 second work sections.


In theory, it is the best way in the world to get the fittest, the fastest. BUT, the reason it doesn't work for everyone is they are not trying hard enough during the work sections. If you choose to work these Tabatas into your training, hit it hard and you will get results!

Where did this science based workout come from? Professor Izumi Tabata came up with the most efficient training program for Japanese Olympic speed skaters to work on their aerobic and anaerobic training simultaneously. He put athletes thru multiple sprint type activities... and after a lot of testing... this Tabata method was born. I asked New York Sports Club master trainer, Edem Tsakpoe about why Tabata training is so popular right now. "Tabata is good workout style to use in training primarily because it taxes and develops both the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems of the body. It can be used to target specific muscles groups or used to do a full body workout. Tabata is also time efficient because it’s efficacy relies on doing bouts exercise involving 20 seconds of exertion and 10 seconds of rest for 4 minute intervals."

I have had a lot of success over the years doing Tabata workouts. They are incredibly intense and I haven't done one since I got pregnant with Brooks. I am currently 10 months postpartum and plan to wait until I have reached the one year mark to bring them back into my workout routine.

I do however want to give Strong Sexy Mammas some Tabata workout options though because we are all in different places in our fitness. Below you will find about a dozen 4 minute workouts I shot for my free AnnaKooiman.com blog before getting pregnant.
